Indeed! SO, if a picture is worth 1000 words, you should be taking pictures of all your projects – before, during, and after. That’s can help you show your best work, “make the fewest mistakes and cover your butt,” according to a GAF PROBlog post by Luke Hansen of CompanyCam, a start-up that manages contractors’ photos.
While Hansen advocates getting everyone on your team to snap photos as a recordkeeping/promotional undertaking, he notes the three following, not-to-be-missed occasions where photos can make a difference:

It’s official. Knowify and Woodard have teamed up to launch the Construction Advisor Network, designed for accounting and QuickBooks ProAdvisors already serving or interested in serving small to medium sized contractors and subcontractors.
Do you “work in construction?”
We do. And we’re looking for like-minded professionals committed to helping construction companies grow and profit. The Construction Advisor Network has a single goal:
To ensure contractors have access the right professionals and best of breed
construction business management solutions.
Why does best of breed advisement and technology matter?
You know how disorganized your clients can be. Historically, construction company owners laser focus on getting new business in the door and completed projects out the door. They rarely pay attention to process improvement and business management metrics. In fact, it’s not uncommon for even large subcontractors to hold tight to old software and inefficient administrative processes. As their advisor, how many hours have you invested in prying paper spreadsheets and random Post-it notes out of their hands and out of their files?
Together we can change that
If you’ve managed to switch your clients to QuickBooks Online, you’ve already won half the battle. Step two is to migrate them away from office wall calendars and desks stacked high with timesheets. Guide them into the digital world and the possibility of running their contracting business cost-effectively and efficiently from a tablet and smartphone — anywhere.
If you’re an advisor seeking a bigger piece of the more than 1.2 million small- and medium-sized construction company market, the Construction Advisor Network offers a game-changing opportunity — Three tiers of FREE membership to generates leads and revenue for you and your firm.
Here’s how it works:
Choose the Tier best for you and your firm
Knowify gives you
Tier I – Introductory: Simply refer your client and Knowify handles all training + support
The first three months’ revenue from that account.
Tier II – Preferred: You manage your client’s training and implementation, with the option to take on more support responsibilities as well
A perpetual revenue share (up to 30%) for accounts you introduce. Plus, we’ll offer prescreened leads in your area to help you grow your business!
Tier III – Partner: You are a Knowify pro with a host of successful implementations.
Ongoing leads and revenue share, plus we’ll feed you other ProAdvisor relationships to mentor (especially from Tier I!).
Do good and do well
The Construction Advisor Network is all about creating win/win situations for every member. Based on your firm’s level of involvement, the Construction Advisor Network can generate new leads for your practice and deeper connections to your clients as you build expertise and add new service offerings.
The Network also will be the home of best practices, proven methodologies, and systems that permit you to deliver appropriate solutions that lead to great outcomes for your clients.

Yum! Bacon and business intelligence — it’s a contractor’s dream.
Are you going to the Intuit/QuickBooks Scaling New Heights “Epic Practice” Conference in the Bahamas May 21-25th? Scaling New Heights “Epic Practice” Conference in the Bahamas May 21-25th? If you are, let’s meet at the Knowify QB Integrated Apps breakfast Tuesday, May 25th at 7am for bacon, eggs, and a deep dive into the “Many Different Flavors of Job Costing,” or “How-to strike the right balance between boring data entry and essential business intelligence.”
The difference between profit and… Preciseness matters. As a contractor or subcontractor, you know how slim the margins are between installing a door that swings shut easily and a door that sticks
Your business — its profitability, or lack thereof requires equally precise data. How well you specify that doorjamb, how carefully you measure — whether it’s to the nearest 1/8-inch, or 1/16th-inch, or depends on the end result desired and the acceptable margin of error. Such is also true when it comes to job costing. How granular, how detailed, how deep you dive depends on the scope of each job and its margins.
Join me, Dan de Roulet, co-founder of Knowify for contractors, a QuickBooks Integrated App, for an overview of job costing over coffee where we’ll discuss:
• The different “flavors” of Job Costing, from the very simple to the very complex; • Evaluating the upside and downside of each job costing approach; • How-to develop a framework for selecting the right approach to match your client; • How QuickBooks Online + the right job costing solution can help you manage and address complex business intelligence / accounting challenges in a way that QuickBooks Desktop cannot; and • Why you need to KNOW your business to GROW your business.
We’ll also cover the three levels of “job costing:”
• Basic: How much did I make (am I making) on a given job? • Advanced: How much did I make for each piece of work I performed on a given job? • Professional: How did I perform against my phase-specific budgets? Where was the slippage? Where can I do better next time?
Knowledge is power, BUT…How do you know whether it’s worth the effort? Join us at the Knowify for Contractor’s Scaling New Heights breakfast and we’ll chew over how to evaluate each job by complexity, which in turn will inform how much data you’ll need to accumulate to be efficient and profitable. We’ll review, for example:
• Job Complexity: Complex jobs are often multi-layered, difficult to track, often opaque. Inputting and accessing numbers can help you cut through the fog so you can see and understand where you and financially on that job. • Job Size: It’s always preferable to know where you stand on a job, what’s on track and when a job is running off the rails. When it’s a big job, there’s more at stake. So, the earlier you know when things are getting off track, the more likely you are to save lot of $$$. Timeliness matters — especially when it comes to how you’re doing! • Future Benefit: Will what we did not this job help you do a better job in the future? The more useful the information will be in the future – this is a function of repeatability – the greater the value in capturing it.
Smart operations matter QuickBooks is good! But the right job-costing add-on can make QuickBooks even better. Knowledge is power. Are you bidding accurately? Allocating time and materials appropriately? Do you know where your people are and what they’re doing? You should. Accessing tools to deliver real transparency into hours, job assignments, client management, and productivity to ensure projects stay on schedule and on budget can make the difference between eking out a living and making real money. And maybe cut down the back office cleanup you do nights and weekends. Win. Win. Win!
So how do you get there? Do your research. Knowify, for one, can help. We’re already helping contractors integrate their business management needs with accounting systems like QuickBooks from an easy-to-use interface accessible from any device — in the field and in the office.

Want to run your business faster, smarter and more profitably? What’s stopping you?
You use a computer. You’ve got a smartphone, laptop, and maybe a tablet. You’re even using an accounting package like QuickBooks to help track payables, receivables, and estimate taxes. So it’s clear you’re not entirely afraid of technology…you’re just not using it to run the rest of your business. Big mistake!
Whiteboards? Spreadsheets? Really?
You’re a contractor. You run a business. How you run your business matters. Whether you do commercial construction, residential contracting, sub or service work, you juggle a lot of moving parts just to keep the doors open and your teams running smoothly. You’ve got to find the work, estimate spot-on to win the work, do the work, bill the work, and still make money.
How’s that going?
No one likes to leave money on the table. It’s stressful. You’ve got to plan every job carefully, itemize material budgets, schedule crews and then take all that data and create a bid attractive to that customer. Win the bid and you’ve got even more “paperwork.” You’ve got to generate contracts, get them to the customer for signature, create service orders, schedule teams and materials, and so on. Every job. Every day.
Are you running your business like it’s still the ’80s?
Maybe. Or maybe you’ve thrown out your paper ledgers and stepped up to an accounting software package like QuickBooks, which is great when it’s used to its fullest. But even QuickBooks can’t manage your day to day operations. It can do payroll. It can help you invoice. It can even remind you to pay your taxes. But…it cannot help you automate your company’s estimating/bidding process. It can’t help you manage projects, people, and workflow in the field or at your desk. Neither can Excel spreadsheets!
